Annual Concert at West End School
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.
Parents, pupils and friends assembled in goodly numbers at the West End .School last evening for the annual concert in aid of school funds. The big classroom was gaily decorated for the occasion and the accommodation was taxed to tho utmost-. The stags was artistically arranged and there was a professional touch about tbc lighting arrangements. The first half of the programme was devoted to items by the children in all of which there was evidence of careful training on the part of the teachers. The various numbers were received with the greatest enthusiasm. There is always a particular charm about children's performances and many of last evening's items wero worthy of special mention. The artistic frocking of the children added to the excellence of tho entertainment;, the earnestness of the youngsters being also most pleasing. A vote of thanks to Mr Moore, the members of the staff and to the assisting artists was carried by acclamation on tho call of Mr Tremaine.
The programme was as follows: Overture; piano solo, Agues Gray; songs, junior pupils; dialogue “Dolly’s Got the Measles,” Lorraine Baldwin and “Dr” Tom Speedy; recitation, Ernie Edwards, Bill Kale, Ron Simpsou and William McFic; operatic duo, Gwen Mason and Joyce Johns; song, Teddy Jamieson; action songs, by standards 3 and 4; folk dances, pierrot troupe; recitation, Margaret Matthews; song, Margaret. Waterhouse; songs by the senior pupils; vocal trio, Margaret Matthews, Beryl Little and Doris Whitehead; dance (sailor’s hornpipe) Rcnc Pcnkcth.
Assisting artists gave items as follow: Trombone solo, Mr J. Elliott; selections, Mr L. Lovcday’s orchestra; song. “Plumstones,” encored, Miss M. Pcnkcth; cornet solo, Mr G. Bcigcrscn, comic song, encored, Mr W. Corke; conjuring, Mr F. H. K, Grace; character sketch, Mr and Mrs Tabor; xylophone solo, Mr Hector Bell; song, “Trooper Johnnie Ludlow,” encored, Mr I. Jensen; thought transmission, Messrs J. Jeromscn and A. Hutchins. The concluding item was a pianoforte solo by Mr Colin Bcrgcrscn.
The accompanists for the adult performers were Misses Elliott and Gorky, Messrs Colin Evrgersen and F. McLachlan.
