ARKANSAS SUFFERS ACTUAL STARVATION
Serious Plight Reported
A MILLION PERSONS DESTITUTE

Reports received by Senators indicate that actual starvation has begun in Arkansas, the Stato worst hit by ihe drought. Senator Caraway has received letters, one of which, from an Arkansas man, said: “My family is near starvation. I have eight children. If you can do anything for me, I sure would appreciate it.” An Arkansas lawyer reported: “I understand from the superintendent of our public school that at least HOC grammar school children aro on slow starvation diet.” The Arkansas lawyer also said: “Thousands of our people, will not be able to subsist another 30 days. ’ ’
A woman wrote: “The morale of our rural population is breaking down daily.” Tho County Relief Chairman of Forrest City, Arkansas, wrote: “Onq-third of the population is in actual want of food. Tho other two-thirds are unable to help.”
Numerous other letters from bankers, business men, and prominent citizens continued the stories of the serious situation. A grocer reported: “Stores aro broken into and held up, banks are being robbed, and cattle killed for food by thieves. Fifty per cent, of the farmers aro without food, feed and clothing.”
Red Cross statistics indicate that a million persons aro destitute in Arkansas alone. Thousands in other States are also suffering.
