Unemployment Beard Cannot Interfere With Wages
Per Press Association. MASTER-TON, Last Night. "Notwithstanding anything that has appeared in the press or that Mr Poison has said on tho public platform, the eold hard fact remains,” said Mr Burdekin, deputy chairman of tho Unemployment Board, to-night, "that it is the policy of tho Unemployment Board not to intcrefcro with the existing scales of wages in force in New Zealand. Employers and employees are left absolutely free to make their own bargains as to wages.
"The Act gives the Board no power to fix wages and the Board is not usurping a function it docs not possess. It is leaving local bodies to fix rates according to their own local conditions and individuals to do so by mutual agreement. The board merely subsidises up to 7s per day.
