Australia’s Trade Treaty With Canada

BUTTER BARRED BY SLIDING SCALE.

Received Thursday 9.50 p.m. OTTAWA, Dec. 17.

The Canadian trade agreement tvilh Australia will bo made public to-mor-row. It contains much more favourable automobile and timber schedules for Canada than the existing pact, the latter item being especially helpful to Canada iu competition with the United States in Australian markets. Canada’s preference on newsprint is extended to wood pulp, kraft paper and fruit wrapping paper. There arc no changes in agricultural inplcmcnt schedules.

Butter carries eight cents, with a proviso however that if the combined Australian price and the Canadian duty is below 32 cents the duty increases to stabilise the minimum import prico at 32 cents. This is an extensive concession to tho Canadian dairyman who is lighting tooth and nail against Commonwealth butter and who threatened to upset the treaty on this item alone. Australia’s greatest gains are naturally in fruits dried and fresh and wines.
