Leading Italians Arrested for Plotting Against Fascists
Professors, Lawyers and Doctors (Times.) Received Sunday, 9 p.m. ROME, Nov. 8. The Italian Government, in a communique, announces the arrest of twenty persons “in various localities in Northern Italy” who ivill he charged before a special tribunal with preparing criminal acts against tho Fascist regime. The communique gives no details and is reproduced in the newspapers without comment. The plotters are said to have been workingin conjunction with anti-Fascist element in Paris. Later. Nearly all those arrested are professors, lawyers or doctors with Republican views. They include Dr. Belotti, Minister of Industry in the Bonomi Cabinet in 1921-22. He recently wrote to Bonomi that he wished to start a literary and historical review expressing independence ideas. The letter was opened and Belotti was arrested. Others accused arc Dr. Renzi, Professor of Philosophy at Genoa University, and Dr. Rossi, Professor of Economies at the Technical Institute, Bergano. As the train conveying those arrested was starting for Rome Rossi jumped out and evaded his pursuers for twelve hours. He was recaptured in the woods bv tho Fascist military! The arrests are believed to have arisen from the clandestine circulation in Italy of the newspaper “Justice and Liberty,” published in Paris in the Italian language.
