CUP-HOLDERS OUT OF RUNNING IN HOCKEY TOURNEY

Otago and Wellington Favoured MANAWHENUA AGAIN BEATEN Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night, To-day’s matches in tho ladies’ hockey tourney resulted as follow: Southland A drew with Wairarapa, 2—all. Wellington beat West Coast, s—l. North Otago drew with Eastern Southland B, 2—all. Eastern Southland A beat South Canterbury, 9—nil. Otago beat Manawhenua. Rotorua drew with Southland B, 2—all. How the Games Went. Southland were only able to effect a draw in their game with Wairarapa and now definitely lose the K Cup. It must be admitted that tho maroon forwards played a ragged game, especially in tho first spell, and had the energy neither to finish off their movements nor to tacklo their opponents. Tho pick of tho quartette was Elsie Woodhoad, who battled hard, but M. Bolsham was disappointing on tho right wing after some of her previous displays. M. McIntyre, from whom so much was expected, was also lifeless, while M. White and M. Clark have both given much more inspiring displays. K. Laidlaw, in tho half-back line, proved horsolf a tower of strength to the maroons’ van whom she fed generously, and her defence work was sound. Wairarapa deserved their draw for their rear division stood up well to the maroons’ onslaughts, which they frequently stemmed. L. Booth was a tower of strength as left full-back, while T. Johnson in the half line gave a sterling display and again and again sent her van away, while R. Brown put in some dashing work on the left wing, where she successfully held M. Belsham. Both fore and aft Wairarapa were right on their game and although in tho second Spell they did not havo the territorial advantage, credit must be given to them for tho stout defence which absolutely held the maroons’ van at bay. A rearranged Wellington forward line took a long time to settle dotvn against West Coast who gave their best display to date, although they encountered their first defeat. At the interval, Wellington had a lead of only I—o1 —0 and Coast had more than held their own territorially. In the second spell the Wellington forwards went better and four goals wero registered. The West Coast forwards made frequent excursions into Wellington territory, but only once managed to net. O. Stapleton, who played a fine game throughout, was the scorer. For Wellington, Misses Maull (2), Harper (2) and Foreman goalcd. After having easily the better of tho first spell, and looking liko winners, North Otago had to be content with a draw against Eastern B, who rallied after tho interval, North Otago seeming to have a habit of fading away in the second spell. Otherwise they would occupy a higher place in their section. For Eastern B, M. White scored both goals, while for North Otago, A. Wills and Cormaek scored.

The match between Eastern Southland A and South Canterbury did not provide a very inspiring display, as South Canterbury wero outclassed in all departments. Though Eastern A wou by 9 goals to nil, their forwards as an attacking unit were not as impressive as in previous games and opportunities wore thrown away.

By their defeat of Manawhenua, Otago further strengthened their chances of winning the K Cup. The dark blues again displayed good combination and looked winners from the first whistle. Manawhenua defended solidly, but they could not keep the versatile Otago forward line out all the time. Miss Hawda put in some great work in defence for Manawhenua aDd but for her splendid tackling and hitting Otago must haver doubled tliiir score. Misses Hunt and Gosney, Otago’s wings, were again in good form. Their pace and stick work largely helped towards Otago’s victory. Miss Blazon showed improved form and Miss Brown at full-back proved solid on defence. Misses Seal and Hakaraia were outstanding members of tho Manawhenua forwards.

The game between Rotorua and Southland B ended in a draw (2 all., but Rotorua had much the better of the game and only for the good defence of Miss Burrell and Miss Hawke with the faulty shooting of Rotorua's forwards, victory must have gone against Southland. Ruahine Beat Wairoa Per Press AssociationDANNEVIKKE, Last NightIn a ladies’ hockey match at Dannovirke, Buahinc (holders) defeated Wairoa (challengers) for tho Lady Carroll shield by 3 goals to 1.
