Civic Reception to Officers and Crew
GREAT PRAISE EOR PENYBRYN. AUCKLAND, Last Night. A civic reception was tendered to Captain Toten, of the Tahiti, and his officers and crew. Captain Toten paid a tribute to the magnificent assistance received from his men and praised tfic part played by the Pcnybryn which he said gave the first feeling of safety. A warm tribute was paid by Capt, Toten and others to Captain Salven, of the Pcnybryn, and a message was read conveying the Government’s gratitude. Interviewed, Capt. Toten would not make a statement: “I can say, however," fie said, “that the passengers were splendid and there was not a murmur from them. They were fine. The officers and crew did everything flirt was required of them and more.”
The officers and crew of the Tahiti left this evening for 'Wellington, where a nautical inquiry will be held.
Two Missing Mailbags Found WELLINGTON, Last Night, The Post Office has received advice that two bags of registered mail from Dundin and .Oamaru, feported missing ■when the Tahiti was abandoned, have been found among the mail saved.
