From Our Own Correspondent.

Horticultural Society.

The committee of the Foxton Horticultural Society met on Friday night. Those present were Messrs D. Christie (president), T, Hughes, R. O. Hornblow, Jas. Ross, N. Crcsswell, Robinson, Rev. W. H. Nicholas, Mesdames E. J. Murphy, R. Owen, Miss A. Spcirs and the secretary (Mr E. J. Murphy). Judges. —Mr B. IT. Just, of Palmerston North, wrote stating that ho would be unable to judge the cut blooms nt the forthcoming show. Mr Gibson was appointed in his stead. Miss Wybnr, of Palmerston North, also wrote, regretting her Liability to be present to judge the needlework section. Mrs Gray was appointed to fill tho vacancy. Electric cooking competition.-—The Horowlienua Electric Power Board wrote in reference to the amount they had donated for tho special electrical cooking section. The board expressed tho opinion that one or two substantial prizes would provo to bo a bigger attraction than tho number of small amounts into which the money had boon divided by tlie society. Tho letter added. however, that tho board wero quite prepared to lcavo the matter in the hands of tho society. During .the. ensuing discussion, members maintained that, a number of small prizes would be preferable to' one or two substantial amounts and accordingly it was decided not to make any alteration in that direction.

Permission to conduct a competition at tho coming show for the purpose ot raising funds for their proposed cycle track, was sought by the Foxton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club.. Owing to the fact that the society intend holding a competition in aid of their own funds, however, permission was withheld.

Several other matters of a forma) nature were dealt with and minor details in connection with the show which takes place on tho 12th instant, were finalised. Band of Hope. Members of the Combined Band of Hope held tlicir monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs .1. M. Thomson, Thynne street on Friday evening, where an enjoyable time was spent. A. most interesting address was delivered by the Rev. R. Tapp and entertaining items were contributed by the following:— Misses Myrtle Hughes (2), Da Thomson (2)', Olive and Beverly Potts, Masters. Tommy Thomson, Brian Cummerficld and George Hughes. Shipping. The m.v. Foxton arrived in port with cargo from the South Island on Saturday morning; Tho vessel sailed again for- Lyttelton on Sunday afternoon with a load of cattle for the Addington market.
