Amateur Championship Finals
Five good amateur bouts, four of them championship finals, were fought as preliminaries to the big contest. Tho results are as under :■<— Richards Beats Haggitty. The first bout was between 1 ‘ Tiger ’ ’ Eichards (P.N.) 10.6 and F. Haggitty (Rongotea) 10.4, two welter-weights. Haggitty got straight to business but Richards kept him off with a straight left. The second was willing, both mixing it with Richards getting the better of the exchanges. Richards scored with his right repeatedly in tho final session but Haggitty connected with one to the head at the bell. It was Richards ’ fight. Holdea Too Good For Caraell. T. J. Holden (Pahiatua) 8.12 de* feated B. Carncll (P.N.) 8.8 at the end of the second round in the final of the featherweights. Holden varied his attack in the first round and scored with both hands to tho head and body. Carncll came out for the second round with a new lease of life and planted a stiff left to tho face several times. Holden was the stronger boy and he was on top again at the bell. Caraell had taken a lot of punishment and the light was awarded to Holden. Karten Beats M. Candy. A. Karten (10.0) and M. Candy (10.0) both of Palmerston North met in tho final of the lightweight championship.. The bout opened with a good deal of infighting, Karten getting a shade the better of it, but Candy sent two good lefts to the face. The second was another good round, Candy making effective use of his left to the face and right to the body. Karten scored with both hands to the head at the gong. Karten was the aggressor in the early part of the third round 1 . and scored with lefts and rights to the head. Candy got some left swings to the face but was made to miss badly towards the end. The verdict to Karten was well received. A Willing Fight. W. Jacobs (Rongotea) 11.3 beat C. Ford (P.N.) 11.0 in the middleweight championship. Ford cariy sent Jacobs’ Lead back with a right but Jacobs returned the compliment with a left. They stood toe to toe throughout the round and both dealt out punishment with straight lefts. In the second both planted heavy blows, Jacobs knocking Ford through the ropes with a right. Just before the bell Ford swung a solid right to tho jaw which rocked Jacobs. The third round had the spectators on their toes. Ford had the best of it to begin with but Jacobs depended on a straight left which gained him the de* eision which met with a mixed reception. Cossill Beats McKay.
J. Cossill 11.12 and L. McKay 12.2 met in the final of the heavyweights. They fought the previous night in the light heavyweight class and Cossill got the verdict. Cossill did most of the leading at the start and relied on a straight left. McKay scored to the face before the gong. McKay sank two heavy rights to the body but Cossill had much the better of the second round, scoring with both hands. Cossill concentrated on the body in tho final, varying the attack with right swings to the head. McKay rallied over the final bit and planted heavy rights and lefts to the face. Cossill was the winner by a wide margin. Before the big bout, the successful amateurs were presented with the trophies, the president of the association, Mr Earle R. Wimsctt, doing the honours. Mr J. M. Pearson announced that tho Manawatu champions would represent the district at the forthcoming Now Zealand amateur championships. Just before the big fight commenced the opportunity was taken to introduce Kala Pasha (“The Terrible Turk”) who is to wrestle Tom Ray at the Opera House later in the month.
