Budget Debate Occupies Parliament
SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM MEMBERS. Per Prfess Associatron. WELLINGTON, Last Night. During tho Budget debato in tho House to-day, Mr. Clinkard appealed for support for local industries, and said that imports were increasing so rapidly in some commodities that it appeared that tho time would come when local industries would be starved out. The time was coming, he sa;d, when public works now engaging thousands of men would be finished and secondary industries would be required. Mr. J. t 6. Fletcher replied to Mr. Clinkard’s criticism on Friday regarding his (Mr. Fletcher's) vote against the Government. Ho asked Mr. Clinkaid if ho had considered his own position in regard to the non-fuliilment of tho pledges that had been made to his electors. Dealing with the Budget, Mr. Fletcher said if the Government had increased liquor licenses, increased postages and capitalised the Highways Fund there would have been no need for other taxation. Mr. A. W. Ilall believed the greatest difficulties the way of making tho railways pay were motor competition and high administration costs. He considered suburban services could be improved by having lighter and faster trains and by eliminating first-class carriages which were quite unnecessary. People did not. want, first-class compartments in ’buses. The debate was continued until 10.30 p.m., when the House adjourned.
