Governor-General Visits Soldier Settlements
PREVIOUS WISH FULFILLED. Under the guidance of Mr B. J. Jacobs, president of the Palmerston North branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, his Excellency tho Gover-nor-General yesterday visited some of tho soldier farms of the district, he having previously expressed a w T ish to see the properties and their owners. Mr Jacobs arranged for a number of soldier farmers to meet his Excellency at the residence of Mr F. A. Lpwis when an interesting and profitable afternoon was spent. The party tramped over one or two of the properties in order to more closely inspect the nature of the terrain and the quality of the stock, Lord Bledisloe conveying to the young farmers numerous valuable hints in respect to type of animal, manuring, and farming in general. Later, a return was made to tho residence of Mr Lewis where Mrs Lewis dispensed a dainty afternoon tea. Approximately two hours were spent in this manner and it was only the urging of his aide-de-camp, Sir John Hanham, •who had to remember other engagements for his Excellency, that finally caused the distinguished visitor to take a Tpluctant farewell of the company. Lord Bledisloe, while expressing regret that time curtailed the duration of his visit, expressed a wish to see more of the farmers of the settlement in the future.
