Mr Forbes Honoured A WARNING TO CANADA Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. In a gathering representative of all shades of political opinion attended by about 300 people the Prime Minister (Hon. G. W. Forbes) was honoured by Canterbury residents on Saturday evening to mark the attainment for the first time of a man born in this province to the highest office in tho Dominion. The chairman, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and Dr. John Guthrie, who proposed the toast, of tho guest, of honour, both referred to Mr Forbes’ uprightness of character. Mr Forbes, responding, said ho had never been at a meeting whero he had so many friends. lie defended the Government's taxation proposals, but. deplored Canada’s action in increasing the tariff on New Zealand butter. “I hope we shall lie able to obtain more favourable terms,” he said. “It is a very short-sighted policy on the part of Canada as tho balance of trade is all in her favour. Wo do not think wo have been fairly treated.”
