POWHIItI WINS CONVINCINGLY. Thea'e was solid support for the bracket (£240) but Powhiri (£92) and Mandate (£B3) returned the dividends. The order past the stand the first time was Maidos, Trouble, Hinatore, Calculation, Mandate, Powhiri, with Risk last. There was little change during the first round except that the field strung out. Past the stand Maidos was still showing the way with Trouble on his quarters. Powhiri was lying third snd then ca.nrc Mandate, Calculation, Iluirangi Girl, Risk and Hinatore. The rider of Calculation lost his iron at the double. There was no alteration along the back except that Powhiri and Mandate wen closing on the leaders and Calculation had dropped out of the race. Across tho top Powhiri was in front with Maidos, Mandate end Risk following. Powhiri was first into the straight and was never troubled in the run home. Over the last jump Mandate gathered the tiring Maidos. Risk was fourth and then came Huirangi GH and Hinatore. Glen Rossie tho Rangiotu. There were sixteen runners in the Rangiotu Handicap, Portray (£352) ■being made favourite. There was plenty of support for Shortly (£290) and Zarene (£222). The winner had 185 tickets invested on his chances. Shortly and Portray were first to show out, followed by Abbey Queen and Zarene. Zarene was rushed to the front and led along tho back from Abbey Que Ch. Then came Portray, Desert Lad, Glen Rossie, Advdntus and Potoaform. Across the top Zarene was still showing the way and led into the straight followed by Abbey Queen, Glen Rossie, Portray, Desert Lad, Potoaform and Great Lady. Glen Rossie hit the front and withstood a strong challenge from Zareno to get •the verdict by half a length. Ruby Pawn came with a late run on the out-

side of the field and got to within a length of the second boTse. Portray was fourth and Desert Lad fifth. Disrank Wins Again. Llyn Bhoi (£394) was installed favourite and there was a big drop to Diana’s Lad (£206) and Mister Gamp (£200) and Omeo (£197). Disrank was first out from the barrier and along the back the order was Disrank, Beaumont, and Evening Hero. Through the straight Disrank and Evening Hero were together three lengths ahead of Omeo and then came Mister G-amp, Llyn Dhu and Diana’s Lad. Along the back the leaders were still together ahead of Omeo and Llyn Dhu. Diana’s Lad wfts lying fifth and Mister Gamp was last. Disrank was in front across the top and the field had closed up. Disrank, Omeo and Llyn Dhu came into the straight in lino and Evening Hero had dropped back to last. In a punishing finish Disrank stayed on long enough to beat Omeo by half a length, Llyn Dhu being two lengths further back. Miner Gamp was fourth. Paddon Beats Marjoram.

There were 10 starters in the Newbury Handicap and Paddon (£7GS) was a hot favourite. Marjoram (£293) wa(? second choice. There was a bit of trouble at the barrier but Mr O'Connor eventually got them aWay in line, Loyal Game being last to move. When the field had settled down Marjoram was acting as pilot with Brilliant Ligtii find Paddon iVing in behind him them came Black Mint, Tori, Duellona. Tlynanna, Orazone, Royal Game and Moutoa Treasury. This order was maintained along the back but across the top Hvnaiina joined Marjoram, Brilliant Light was lying third and Ifcon came the favourite, Black Mint, Teri, Duellona and Iloyal Gfime. Marjoram led into the straight from Hynanma, Paddon and Black Mint. The favourite got through on the rails and in a good finish got home by a short length. Black Mint was a head away and Moutoa Treasury was close up fourth. Brilliant Light was next followed by Orazone, Hynanna, Royal Game, Teri and Duellona. Postman Shows the Way. ■ There -Wero. no scratchings in the Kaira.ri.ga Hurdles. It was an ever: betting race with. Jin Jazz (£346) installed favourite. Archeria (£275) was second choice and there wore 344 tickets invested on Postman’s chances. Postman was first out from the barrier and the order across the top was Postman, Jiu Jazz, Rhodesian, Archeria, Copey and Pikimai. Postman led through the straight with Rhodesian and Archeria and Jiu Jazz and Copey following in that order. Pikimai fell in front of the stand. Postman open d tip a break along the back and was well clear crossing the top Jiu Jazz was second in front of Copey and this order was unaltered Postman winning by four lengths. Copey was six lengths behind Jiu Jazz and then came Rhodesian and Archeria.

Courageous Wins Well. There were no serateliings in the Terrace Handicap and when the machine closed Robbie’s Mistake (£410) was favourite'. There was plenty of support for Courageous (£334) and Mira-biLary (£283). Warzone was first cut but she was quickly displaced by Airforce, Robbie’s Mistake, Calamine and Oallamart. The order along the back was Airforce, Robbie’s Mistake, Calamine, Callamart, Eicry Comet, Spearform, Warzone, Mirabilary, Magic Land, with Courageous making a forward move. Across the top Callamart was in behind Airforce, with Fiery Comet third, them came Calamine, Robbie’s Mistake, Courageous, Spearform and Warzone. Into the straight tho order was Airforce, Oallamart, Fiery Comet, Courageous and Whakauc and in the run home Courageous got up to win by two lengths from Wi)-a-bane who finished very fast. Kilorell was 4 third and then came Spearform, OaManiait, Calamonc and Warzone. A Great Race. Glen Rossio was the only defection from the Mcßae Handicap and taeie was a good pool (Cad-land (£59 1 ) being the favourite and Hopwocd (£527) second choice. It was a great race and the finish was the best or the meeting heads separating the four placed horses. Blue Paper was first cut from the barrier, followed by Kilmezzo, Arrow Lad, Hopwood, Oadiand, Broad Acre and Royal Damon. Across the top B-luC Paper was still in front, Arrow Lad and Kilnnezzo were to gether next and then came Hopwood, Oadiand “and Broad Acre in line. Royal Damon, Otairi and Moepai bringing up the rear. Blue Paper was first into the straight with Arrow Lad, Kilmezzo, Hopwood, Broad Acre and Cadland close up. Arrow Lad was in front passing the stewards’ stand and in a great finish Broad Acre just got up in tlmo to head off Arrow Lad. Cadland was a head further back and Royal Damon fourth, then came Otairi, Hopwood and Kilmezzo.

Sporting Chance the Milson Ruby Dawn was the only defection from the final event and a field of 19 went to the post. The top weight Taranto (£553) was installed favourite and Phndia (£4IS i and Okapua (£387) wore next in order. The winner had 114 tickets on him. When the barrier went up Abbey Queen was quickest to fmd her feet and when the field settled down she was showing the way to Chance, Dick Whittington, Pandia, Catherine of Aragon, Taranto end Acco. Dick Whittington and Sportice- Chance were in front turning into tLc straight, then came Taranto, Abbey Queen, Pandia and Catherine of juragon. In the nut to the post Sporting Chance withstood a strong challenge by Abbey Queen and got the verdict by half a length. Pandia was three lengths away and then came Taranto, Prime Moutoa, Pat’s Boy, Catherine of Aragon and Dick Whit* tingtop. The winner paid a nice dividend. . . end of hymestrason. Mr E. E. Hatch suffered a severe loss cm Saturday morning when it was found necessary to destroy Hymeatrason who was injured during tho running of the Awapuni Steeplechase on Thurs* day. _Mr Hatch hoped to save the, gelding.
