RAT INVASION
/A NATIONAL PROBLEM Although modern Budapest is far removed in time and space from the “Hamlin town” of Browning’s poem, there is nothing which would be more welcome to the city council, at the moment, than the appearance of a Pied Piper. The rats are said to De ■- streaming out of Russia into neighbouring countries. It is stated that the Minister of Welfare has instructed the council that the city must get rid of its rats before June, and it is proposed to organise a “rat )veek” in which all owners of buildings, whether private or public, must exterminate their rats or risk a : fine. It is also proposed to rebuild H gradually the sewers of the city, so that rats will in future be unable to lodge in them.
