IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF CHEESE

What Government is Doing QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT Ptt Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. In reply to a question in the House of Representatives to-day submitted by Mr. H. G. Dickie on behalf of the Taranaki members of Parliament, Hon. A. J. Murdoch, Minister of Agriculture, said his attention had been drawn to press reports of the recent meeting at Itawcra of the Taranaki Federation of Dairy Factories, and it was evident to him in considering tho whole mattor that the most important question bo fore tho dairy industry at present was that of cheese quality. He commended the decision of tho meeting to put into force a voluntary scheme for obtaining funds for paying a premium on the higher qualities of cheese and stated that this should prove a valuable factor in raising tho general standard arid should be an incentive to all to produce an article of the highest quality. Apart from this it was necessary to take advantage of all other means by which improvement could be effected. Scientific workers who were already closely studying this matter would be afforded every opportunity for carrying on research. Tho Departments of Agriculture and Scientific and Industrial Besoarch wore working together through tho Dairy Besoarch Committee which was a very representative body. The Dairy Besearch Institute at Mas. scy 'College was the main centre of this special research and in its laboratories and its dairy factory was giving special attention to openness in cheese. Similar investigations were being prosecuted in tho laboratories at Hamilton and Hawera. The Minister added that he intended to arrange in co-operation with tho Minister in chargo of the Scientific and Industrial Besearch Department for a special conference of all scientists engaged in dairy research to discuss tho quostion and advised the Government as to what could be done further to overcome the existing difficulties.
