Sacred Concert Held Last Night

A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. In remembrance of the great spirit of those strong, faithful hearts lett on the soil of alien lands, many Palmerstonians gathered in tlio Opera House i;:st evening to hear the sacred concert rendered by the Palmerston North Orpheus Society and assisting artists under the tiircction of tho Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr. T. P. Henderson conducted tho massed singing of the society, while t lie assisting artists were Mrs. W. J. K. Gilmour, Missies N. Whalloy, D. Baker, D. Stevens, E. WotxMeld, Ulu Hancock, McKenzie and Messrs W. Watters, C. Bell, E. G. Seeker and McKenzie.

The programme rendered was: Part song, “Deathless Army” Orpheus Society; violin solos, Miss D. Baker; violin and cello, Mr. and Miss McKenzie; song, “The Trumpeter,” Mr. E. G. Seeker; chorus, “Prison Scene” (11 Trovatorc) Orpheus Society; song, “Over the Dreamland Sea,” Miss N. Whalloy; song, “Two Grenadiers,” Mr. W. Watters; musical monologue, “A Gentleman of France,” Miss Ulu Hancock; instrumental “The R-a.g Doll,” Mr. 0. Bell; part song, “Pickaninny Lullaby,” Orpheus Society. With the appreciative audience recalling the artists, in some cases for four encores, testimony was given to the high class of the performance. At an opportune moment, Mr. B. J. Jacobs, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in Palmerston North, took tho opportunity to extend thanks to all who had attended the function and, while ho was very grateful to those who had given their services, he wished , to extend his thanks to the artists who had offered to aid. It was impossible to accept all. He extended thanks to the Rev. G. O. Cruickslianks, of Auckland, who was in the audience and who had conducted the service on tho Showgrounds in the afternoon. Thanks were also duo to all the ladies and institutions which had helped to make the raising of moneys for needy cx-scrvico men such a success and ho assured all tfhat every effort was being made to expend the takings in the best and most judicious manner.

At the conclusion, Mr. Jacobs stated that the takings at yesterday’s service for the grave fund wero £27 17s 3d, that the evening concert had realised £56 6s lOd and that last year, some £844 from Poppy Day collections was allotted tho returned servicemen.
