FROM THE HUB

Dear Cogs, We seem to bo in a maze of holidays. I don. ’t know really which day it should be, but every day lately seems to be like Sunday. The town has a deserted appearance, and most people seem to be away. The weather has been ideal for holidays, but there is a decided nippiness in the air that reminds us that, summer is a thing of the past, and when I see the berries and autumn loaves, I know that it is so. Anzae Day again. What memories come with a rush; it seems as though we only ready stop to think of the tnings that happened during that terriblo time, when the 25th. of April rolls round each year to remind us that that day is sacred to our heroes of the World War. Gallipoli docs not signify very much to the boys and girls of today, it is a name only, but to the splendid sons and brothers ,who set fourth to conquer all that came their way, Gallipoli must stand as a glorious failure. To-day the various points, where graveyards mark the last resting piace of true and brave hearted sons, we, who stayed bohird to keep the home fires burning, stop a moment and think with reverence of a handful of men who went forth without flinching against overwhelming odds. And so it is, children, a sort of monument to the living and the fallen, in the name of ANZAC. J, I am disappointed with 'the story competition. Of all the essays sent in there was not one that I could genuinely award a first prize. However, I really think that with a little concentration and more thought to the., subject chosen, you could all do much better.

You will bo delighted to hear that I have passed the money over to tho Matron of the Palmerston North Hospital for the cot, and that the order has [ gone through. We will hear more of 1 that very shortly, and I will also be ablo to loc you know what is being engraved on the plate which will be at- £ tached to the cot. Did you receive your prizemoney, i- Freda? I am anxious to know about that. I explained the error in last • week’s Skilltcst, the word horse, should . have read house.
