Anzac Dag
OBSERVED IN FEILDING. SOLDIERS’ AND' CITIZENS’ SERVICES. In common with other towns throughout the Dominion, Anzac Day was observed in Feilding in glorious weather yesterday. The big muster of returned men who marched to St. John’s Church for the soldiers’ service, iifcluded several of the original Anzacs, to whom the day brought back memories of the landing on Gallipoli.’s shores. April 25, 1915, was such a day as yesterday, with the sun pouring down on the parched and stunted growth over which Australians and New Zealand troops struggled against terrific odds in a hopeless effort to win possession of the heights which commanded the Narrows. All this —and much more—come to the minds of those who engaged in that act of heroism.
At. St. John’s Church, the returned men, numbering over 130, listened with intense interest to the eloquent sermon delivered by. the Rev. Canon James, of St. Paul’s, Wellington. Tho Canon is a returned man, having seen service with tho “Toimnv” armies in Franco
where, as luv stated, he had earned to look upon the men of Anzac as indeed heroes.
Following, the service, wreaths were placed on tho churchyard monument and on the two monuments in Manchester Square, after which the returned men were tho guests of the ladies’ Anzac lunch committeo at luncheon in the Parish hall.
The Citizen's memorial service, held in the Square, drew a large crowd, which followed keenly tlie forceful address by the Rev. F. Copeland. Tho PeUding Caledonian Pipe and tho Salvation Army bands provided music for the march to the church in tin: morning service and the singing in the afternoon was led by the Salvation Army band.
