Sydney League Footballer's Romance—Auckland Girl is now Mrs, W. Shankland
Behind the arrival by the Niagara of a charming New Zealand blonde ie a story of secret love (says the “Sydney Sun”). The cause of it all was the eye for beauty of Bill Shankland, dashing Kugby League winger, and also the determination of Shankland, so well-known to followers of football. Love and football divided the attention of Shankland prior to his departure for England with the Kangaroo team. His football friends knew only of his football interests, but Shankland was resolved to take no risks of
losing his New Zealand sweetheart while abroad —he
insisted that they be married then and there.
Unknown to other members of the team, Mrs. Shankland, under her maiden name, travelled by their liner, the Aorangi, as far as Auckland. “It was Bill’s wish that our marriage should be kept secret,” confessed Mrs. Shankland. “None of the other fellows guessed on tho Aorangi that 1 was Bill’s wife; but they must have wondered who the girl was,” she laughed. Mrs. Shankland was formerly Miss Daphne Craig, of Auckland. She said she met her husband while holidaying in Sydney.
Racing’s mostly froth and bubble; Two things stand like brick. One—to know the prads in trouble; Two—the ones to pick.
