FORTHCOMING FESTIVAL. Arrangements are wrell in hand for tho staging of the annual festival conducted under the auspices of tho Manawatu Competitions Society, and the number of entries received by the secretary (Mr. W. Newlands) totals 930, thus assuring a season this year that should prove just as enjoyable to pat* rons as any held previously. Last year entries exceeded the 1000 mark, constituting a record in the history of tho society but this year tho competitors in tho vocal division havo not been so numerous as wa3 anticipated. All other sections, however, are well up in numerical strength and judging by the names of somo of the entrants appearing on the register, thero is no doubt that tho quality will again be outstanding. Detailed entries are:— Elocution (adults) 120 Elocution (juvenile) •• •• .. 223 Speeches Id Instrumental music .. .. .. 104 Vocal 11" Dancing (fancy) 209 Dancing (national) 146 Total *• 930 The festival will commence on Friday, May 9, at 2 o’clock and will continue, morning, afternoon and evening, until Thursday, May 15. On the following Friday and Saturday evening the demonstration concerts will be held, w-hen the successful competitors will supply the programmes.
