Podmore Reprieve is Upheld by Labourites

The Independent Labour party conference passed Mr. J. Maxtou’s resolution, regretting that Mr. J. R. Clynes had refused to exerciso his constitutional power for reprieving Podmore, in which case a large volume of public opinion urged such action. Tho resolution added that the Independent Labour party had repeatedly declared in favour of the abolition of capital punishment and that this was the opportunity of avoiding useless barbarity. The resolution was telegraphed to Mr. Clynes.

A resolution was also carried deploring the failure of the Government to make adequate provision in tho Budget by drastic taxation of the wealthy for money required for social services. DEATH PENALTY PAID. Received Tuesdav, 11.20 p.m. LONDON, April 22. Podmore has been executed. An eyewitness states that the condemned man was unemotional and placidly wrote letters till a few minutes before his death. Ho refused breakfast but at the last, gratefully accepted stimulants,
