There has been a decline in horse entries at most Canterbury shows this year, and this is .largely owing to the in-roads made by motor power. Draught horses are being replaced by motor-lorries and the tractor, while the motor-car has ousted the greatest proportion of saddle and harness horses. Final 'figures relative to the 1929 United States harvest -were published by the Department of Agriculture just before Christmas Wheat production is shown to have been 800,508,000 bushels compared with 902, 749,000 in 1928. The maize crop was 2,622,189,000 bushels in 1929, and 2, 839,959,000 in the previous year, while that of oats was 1,238,654,000 and 1,449,531,000 bushels respectively.
