HOME MADE AEROPLANE DAMAGED AT ROTORUA
Hits Small Obstacle MACHINE UPENDS, pilot Uninjured CROWD’S SYMPATHY. Per Press Association. . ROTORUA, Last Night. This morning, an aeroplane piloted by Mr. Allison, crashed when landing at Rotorua. Tuo ’plane was one to which great interest attached, being the home production of two Whakatane young men. Tho machine safely accomplished the journey from Whakatanc to Rotorua, circling round to the landing ground following Captain MacGregor iii a Moth. In attempting to get a full runway length, the machine hit a small knob, breaking a portion of the undercurriago and overending, standing on its nose. The pilot was uninjured and was warmly cheered by the crowd, while much sympathy was shown fo; the young aviator.
N.Z. Airways Machine Makes Forced Landing
PILOT UNINJURED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last' Night. A Simmonds-Spartan aeroplane, owucd by New Zealand Airways, Ltd., suffered some damage to the propeller and wings to-day, when the pilot, Mr. McGovern, who was making passenger flights, found it necessary to make a forced lauding in a rough field at Middlcmarch. No passenger was in the machine at the time, as the pilot was trying it out. It is understood that he was having engine trouble when the machine encountered an air pocket. The pilot was uninjured. Lindbcrg, with his wife, set a new trans-Continenta*. speed record when they landed at Loekhcad in a Sirius plane in 1-1 liouw 14 minutes after leaving Glendale, California, at S.2G in the morning, New York time. The Lindberghs mado ono stop of 20 minutes to refuel at Wichita, Kansas. Tho entire flight was mado at altitudes of 11,000 to 20,000 feet. They made the flight to prove that transcontinental air express planes may fly more swiftly with less storm resistance at high altitudes. Police and State troops were compelled to strain to the utmost to keep the mob from the plane following a neat landing.
