Bowling
“WELCOME MANAWATU.” One wonders whether the bowlers from Manawatu, recently in our midst, found the drought very severe (says tho Evening Post). They were here during the height of a very dry spell, and rumour has it that on a certain green with a parched sub-soil they found the conditions very arid indeed. The trouble was due, it is said, to the fact that the contents of a threegallon jar of “lime juice” would not sprinkle 'themselves evenly like the rain amongst forty men, although a halfcrown levy had been struck to ensure that the flowing bowl would roll on its way smoothly right up to the head. At all events, the complaint is that the thirsty souls sapped the receptacle dry before many heads of the match worn played, and after that it became a case of “night or Blucher,” the water tap or nothing. The state of affairs in a ’ meteorological sense, of course, became so sultry, indeed, that the washer on the tap became worn out and all the- plumbers of the Eastern Suburbs were as unfortunate as tho King’s horses and men with HumptyDumpty, in that they could not put it together again. Some thought of invoking the aid of a corporation watercart, with which to assuage their pangs but other* thought it would be better to expend Iho balance of the sum
raised through the levy on the ‘‘ginger pop.” Nothing was doing in this direction, however, and the last heard of the business was that an inverted jar was found in a nearby paddock swathed with suitable funereal floral emblems and bearing the somewhat lugubrious-looking legend, ‘‘Welcome Manawatu.”
