t SHOULD IT BE AWARDED PRIZES? An important point in connection with tho showing of pigs at A. and P. shows was brought up at yesterday’s meeting of tho Manawatu-Oroua branch of the Pig Breeders’ Association by the secretary, Mr. E. P. Neilsen, who is also a show judge. He urged that tho last farrowing date should be stipulated when entries are made and explained that his object was to stop tbo showing of pigs which, because of barrenness, were useless to tho industry. He instanced a case of a pig which was unabio to produce a litter and yet bad been awarded championships. Members of the branch agreed with the object underlying Mr. Neilsen’s proposal. It was mentioned that a similar state of affairs might be existing with cattle as well as pigs—that cows that had been injured internally and could not produce calves, might be going from show to show and securing prizes. A perusal of show catalogues revealed that some A. and P. Associtions stipulated that cows had to bo in milk or visibly in calf but there were - other associations that made no euch condition.
