Mute Fang the Sprint Glares Record Breaking Performance in Autumn For the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn fixture, there was continued fine weather and with the exception of one sector along the back near the half-mile, the track was very fast. Star Stranger had a worthy opponent in Concentrate in the Trentham Gold Cup, but the son of Martian responded wonderfully when pressure was applied. The Autumn Handicap was taken by Glare from a classy field in record time and the Suburban went to White Fang by a narrow margin.

How They Ran . LOOKED LIKE A CERTAINTY After his impressive performance on Saturday, when ho finished second after being loft, Don Quixote was made a short priced favourite for the Ngaio High weight, carrying £llß9, as against £936 on Aberfeldy and £475 on Goldlike. 000-k swerved out a-t the start and lost ground. Aberfeldy was firs-t to show out from Audience, Goldlike, Pedestal, Don Quixote, Tourist and Borsal-on-e. At the live furlongs, the favourite Was still fourth while Tourist wa-s giving ground and Mister Gamp was last. Aberfeldy, Don Quixote uud Goldlike were together crossing the top, with Pedestal, Audience and Vivo in the next bunch. The favourite at once came away in the straight to beat Tunbridge by a long neck, which like Tourist,, a head away, finished'strongly. Pedestal, Wen day and Mister Gamp were next.

Stirring Finish. Great Charter was not highly regarded for the Hutt Handicap, which was a good betting race but he was a good thing beaten. Panther (£965) and Vali (£855) were the best backed. Vali drew the inside and began smartly, showing the way to Malayan, Dolomite, and Royal Saxon. Then after a couple c£ furlongs, Malayan took up the running from Dolomite and Vali, Arikiwai coming up fast and the others bunched. This was the order on the home turn, where Great Charier and Panther wore at tho tail of the held. At the straight entrance, Full Feather came on the scene and joined issue with Vali and Arikiwai. The last-named retired within the half distance and Great Charter simultaneously put on steam and finishing with great clan on the outside, just failed to roach Full Feather by a neck, Vali was a head away and Panther, Arikiwai, Royal Saxon, Malayan and Dolomite finished as mentioned. From the rc-ar, Great Charter had to run round his field and at tho straight entrance was conceding about four lengths to tho leading pair. Full Feather ran a very good race but with an earlier run Great Charter would have had him beaten. Dolomite faded away to last in the final two furlongs.

Star Stranger as Pacemaker. The defection of Count Cavour left three runners in the Trentham Gold Cup. Star Stranger was a pronounced favourite and probably for the first timo in his racing career, took up the role of pacemaker from tho jump off. Concentrate and Rapier kept in that order also throughout the journey, except when Concentrate headed the favourite temporarily in the great duel to tho judge. Passing the stand the first time, Star Stranger was a length in front- of Concentrate, with Rapier three lengths further back. Up to this point, the pace had been slow but going away again, Star Stranger speeded up° a little. The others, however, still kept their relative distances, till, crossing the top, Rapier was only a length behind Concentrate. On the turn, however, he again fell back a couple of lengths. . The favourite had a bare length advantage of his more formidable rival as they swept into the straight and at the false rail, Concentrate had him headed for a few yards. Star Stranger drew level and t-ben ensued a great trial of stamina. Concentrate was rather more than holding his own 25 yards from the post but Gray gave his mount a couple of smart cracks and it was a revelation to see the big fellow respond. He strode out like a greyhound and won by a bare neck, 'w-ith Rapier a good six lengths in tho rear. The win proved very popular. Concentrate had everything in his favour, with Star Stranger out in front but he cannot produce a sprint at the end of two miles. The sectional tames ■were: First mile 1.50, first ten furlongs 2.164, mile and a half, 2.43 4-5, two miles 3.32,

Crowded Finishing Line. Seldom is sucli a crowded finishing line seen as was witnessed at the conclusion of the Muritai Handicap, won narrowly by St. Melba, which has improved immensely since becoming the property of B. Burgess. They made Baku a very solid order, with £1493 as against £1056 on Gay Crest and £Bl7 on Grecian. Paris took up the role of pacemaker, with Royal Opera, Iviriana and Gtay Oregt moved up behind them, with Grecian on the rails, 'l'ko leaders were still unchallenged at the straight entrance, where Paris, Grecian, Kirilina, Grattus and Royal Opera were in close order. Gay Crest came over on Grecian and squeezed him in, and Paris and Royal Opera had the race to themselves for a while, till Grecian came again in the middle of the hold and left the leader standing. Then St. Melba came with a wet sail, wide out and 30 yards from th© post, was lighting it out with Grecian and Royal Opera. Pa'hu next hove in sight right on the outside of the courso and in a desperate finish, with horses strung right across the track, St. Melba got home by a neck from Grecian, which beat the favourite, Pahu, by a head. With heads only between them followed Royal Opera, Gay ’Crest and Auctioneer.

Hard Luck, Hard Words. A field of 19 went into the starter ’s hands for the Pacific Handicap and there was a long delay at the barrier, occasioned mostly by the fractiousness of Merry Cry. Finally, the two-year-olds got away in a good line, Hard Words on the inside and Tentcrdcn, well out, being the first to become prominent. As they came on to the courso proper, the leaders were- the favourite, Lineage, Love Song, Lady Pam, Rapallo, Jayson and Hard Words. At the half distance, the last-named took up the issue with Lineage clear of the others, and had disposed of the favourite when Lady Pam raced up alongside, while Jayson entered calculations immediately afterwards. Lady Pam, ridden right out, won by a short neck. The judge placed Jayson second and Hard AVords, third. Awaken, RaPaUio, Lineage, Jenny Diver, Charmaine and Tentcrdcn crossed the line at rather wide intervals. Lineage was entrusted with £909 on the tote and the Ivembail bracket had £SBO. Glare Breaks a Record.'

In process of winning the Autumn Handicap by a margin of three lengths from Paquito, the Australian Sun gelding, Glare, clipped a quarter of a second off the New Zealand and Australian record for 11 furlongs, previously held by Star Stranger whoso time was 2.17. It was a race preceded by solid wagering. Vcrtigern ran out favourite°with £l4lß, Paquito had £IIS9 of the public puvso and In the Shade was third fancy, with £llOs. The best beginners in the high-class field of a dozen (Taneriri was the only scratching) were The Hawk, In the Shade, Latin Quarter, with Vertigern at the head of the others. On the turn Ho\lako moved up on the outer and into the straight was right behind Billion, Jaloux and Glare as they straightened up. Glare had the lead at the half distance and holding off several determined challenges, got home three lengths ahead of Paquito, which covered a lot of ground. Jaloux was-half a length back, Paitonu was fourth, then came In the Shade, The Hawk, and Billion in close-formation. A'Fast Sprint.

Moa Bird, Liimosin aad Malayan •were taken out of tlie Suburban Handicap, 12 having their engagements continued and the place-getters gave the judge a difficult job. The favourites were Eaglet (£824) and First Money (£7S4). First , to show out were First Money, The Haider, Cimabue and Miss Hansom but as they reached the half mile peg the order was The Raider and First Mony on the rails, Goblin Market, Miss Ransom, Eaglet and Cimabue. They came to the course proper like a regiment of cavalry, the leaders at this stage including First Money, Royal Bax on, To Awhina, then ihe Raider, Flair and Eaglet. First Money, on the rails, was lighting it out in front with Royal Saxon when he knuckled over and stopped The Raider, which was immediately behind, nearly throwing tho Feilding gelding over tho fence. Eugfet at on-oo took up the issue with the leader and Flair and Cimabue were also looking dangerous, when out of the ruck, cutting his way through like a butchers' cleaver, came White Fang to win by a short head from Eaglet anil Royal Saxon, which wore locked together. Cimabue wa-s a close fourth,

with Royal Duke and Flair best among the others. Mandy Again.

Havaspot was a better favourite than Mandy for the Belmont Handicap, with heavy support also for Leader and Hunting Call. The leaders on to the course proper wero Hunting Call, Mandy and Sunldssed, with Leader and Lucrotia in close attendance. Hunting Call and Sunkissed were headed by Mandy and Havaspot and Lucrotia ranged up to her but the Paper Money maro carried too many guns and beat Lucretia by two lengths, with, Havaspot a head away. Hunting Call, Sunkissed, Leader, Oral and Glenrossio were next.
