MANAWATU CRICKETERS TO MEET SOUTHLAND XI

In Hawke Cup Match

FOURTH CHALLENGE OF PRESENT SEASON

Manawatu, the holder of the Hawke Cup—the Minor Associations ’ cricket trophy—will be meeting the Southland representatives at Palmerston North on February 26 for the fourth challenge of the present season and, in view of this fact, the sole selector (Mr. A. M. Ongley) has chosen the following players to practise for the game: — Cutler, Ongley junr. (High School); Broughton, Palmer (R.S.A.); Pacey, Grcig, Spring, O’Keefe, Deiderich, Fletcher, (Old Boys); Ongley, McVicar, Norris, Galliehan, Mullins, Pegddn, (Palmerston); Baumbcr, (Horowhenua). The Manawatu representatives have now held the cup for two years, taking it from Wanganui and defending it successfully against teams from all over the Dominion. This year has already seen the defeat of Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and Taranaki, while there are several other challengers waiting for a match with the holders. The Southlanders will prove formidable opponents having a sterling record this year, which includes the best performance against the M.C.C. visitors of any of tbo minor associations. The Ranfurly (Rugby) and ladies’ hockey shields already repose in Southland s keeping and the southerners are keeß to annex the cricket laurels. Incidentally, Southland has the distinction of being, the original holder of the Hawke Cup, having won the deciding match against Rangitikei (the North Island champion eleven of that time). Making the fifth fixture for Manawatu this season, the holders (if successful) will only be called upon to meet another aspirant and this will probably be Rangitikei, in view of this district having its fixture postponed last season on account of rain. Nelson and Wairarapa are also seeking the cup.
