Robbie, C. D. Hepburn, G. Lane, W. Dudley and T. J. Smith (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. L. J. Plank) reported that 24 new scholars had been enrolled. Mr. F. Grover had received an appointment to a sole charge at the Mangatawhiri school, near Pokeno. Three pupils of the school had se' for the Junior National scholarship examination and, although not successful, tjvo secured free places, which was very creditable, in consideration of the fact that only 29 in the Wanganui district succeeded. It was agreed that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr. Grover for his work at the Hokowhitu school and congratulating him on his new appointment. The secretary reporte dtbat after all expenses had been paid there was £l4 6/9 clear profit on the school concert. The matter of a picnic was discussed. Mr. T. J. Smith moved that there should be no school picnic this year, as the amount of trouble incurred was not warranted by the results. He had heard that two other schools in Palmerston North were having a treat in the school grounds instead and moved that the picnie be held in the Domain near the school. Mr. E. D. Wycherley seconded the motion. Mr. C. H. Amos moved as an amendment that the picnic be held at Ashhurst, as the children did not appreciate a picnic at home. Mr. C. D". Hepburn seconded. The chairman and Mr. Robbie also expressed views in favour of the amendment. _ The headmaster said that if there was a picnic to,be held he thought it undoubtedly shSuld take place out of town. The amendment was then unanimously carried. The secretary was instructed, to write to the secretary of the Ashhurst Domain 1 Board for particulars and to apply for February 14 as the date. Mr. reported on the decision of the Combined Schools Association in regard to the acquisition of property in Palmerston North for a dental clinic. There would be about 28 schools concerned in one big effort to raise the amount of money required. This had been decided upon following tho visit of the Minister of Health. Mr. Amos moved and it was unanimously carried that any decision made by the association would be backed up by the Hokowhitu committee. It was decided to grant £5 towards the health camp to be held at the Awapuni racecourse.
