No Sign of Pack Ice Breaking for Byrd

HINT OF EARLY WINTER. (By Russell Owen.) Received Sunday 11.30 p.m. VANCOUVER, Feb. 1. The weather is gloomy, with strong cold wind from tho south, hinting at winter. Yesterday, wo had the heaviest snowfall for a long time. There are no more indications of the ice going than a month ago, and wo cannot help comparing conditions with those in the years Amundsen came. His ship was through the pack in five days; the ice went out the first year on January 13 and the second time, between January 19 and 30. Heavy ide may come in cycles, or perhaps wc are in the middle of & bad pack.
