CANADIAN BOWLERS TO PLAY IN PALMERSTON N.

Arrangements Finalised

FIXTURES MADE BY MANAWATU BOWLING CENTRE

A meeting of tho Alanawatu Bowling Centre was held yesterday morning, Air. J. A. Nash, ALP., presiding. Also present were Alessrs G. W. Wardrop, E. Ely, G. N. Stephenson, A. E. Cooksley, R. Ramsay, D. Christie, J. Bartholomew, E. Anderson, A. Williamson and A. F. Wimsctt (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Canon Petrie and Alessrs. A. Goodbchero and A. E. Horn.

Arrangements were finalised in connection with the forthcoming visit of the touring party of Canadian bowlers, who will arrive in Palmerston North on Wednesday, January 15, and, after playing against Palmerston North and district rinks in the afternoon, will leave on the following day.

The party consists of 32 men and eight ladies, but according to information received, only six of the eight rinks travelling will play in Palmerston North.

It was decided to play a six rink match in Palmerston North ou the Wednesday afternoon, play to commence at 2.30 p.m. A smoke concert for the men will be held on Wednesday evening, and on the Thursday morning the visitors will be taken for a motor drive around tho district. Separate arrangements will be made for the entertainment of the lady members of the party. In order to obtain district representation among tho rinks opposing the visitors it rvas decided to fix tho Alanawatu representation on a membership basis among the clubs. On this allocation tho clubs will be represented as follows: Palmerston North, Feildi-ng, Northern, Terrace End, Pahiatua, Dannevirke, Eketahuna, Levin, Oroua, Woodville ,two players; Foxton, Shannon, Alanarvatu, Takaro, one player. It was decided to make the annual fixtures against Wanganui and Wellington Centre matches. Both of these centres will send teams to Palmerston North this season, Wanganui on Thursday, February 6, and Wellington towards the end of the same month. Air. G. W. Wardrop suggested that a selection committee to the Ccntio be appointed to get teams together for theso matches, but this did not meet with general approval, and it was finally decided to make the team up on the same allocation as that fixed for the Canadian bowlers. Wanganui will send six rinks and Wellington probabily will send eight. If the Wellington nnlcs exceed six in number, the allocation will be increased accordingly.

Easter Tournament Preliminary arrangements were made for the Easter tournament, which it was decided to hold on Alarch IS, 19 and 21. When the question of prize money came up for consideration, Air. R. Ramsay suggested that the amount offered should bo increased and that a fourth prize should bo offered. He contended that no “cheese-paring” methods should be adopted in regard to tho tournament, and that special pains should be taken to entertain not so much the winning players as the weaker men who did not have the pleasure of winning prizes. Even if the prize money was not increased, he thought that more money might well be spent to make the tournament more attractive. Air. Nash: As long as you are prepared to stand it, wo will look after them. It was finally decided that the prize money be the same as in previous years, but that an increased amount be spent on entertainment. In regard to the length of the games, it was decided that it be 18 heads for general play and 21 heads for post-section play. Air. D. Christie took the opportunity af advancing somo criticism of the recentlv conducted pairs tournament. He contended that the posters for tho tourney had not been sent out soon enough, and that the tourney had not been given sufficient prominence. Mr. Nash, in reply, stated that big entries were never received for the New Year tourney as it was hold during the holiday period, when many bowlers were on vacation. Care would be taken that the posters for the Easter tournament were sent out in ample time.

On the motion of Mr. Christie it was decided to send out Anal reminders to probable players, in addition to the posters.
