Fifteen Inches of Snow

The worst blizzard in 15 years is sweeping the Middle West States and the Canadian prairies. Sleet and snow have tied up lake, road and rail trariic and have caused great misery in the poor quarters of the cities. The blizzard dislocated traffic in Ontario yesterday, and then moved south through the Mississippi Valley. The death list runs from 30 to 40. A feature of the snowfall of 15 inches is that thousands of motor cars have been left stranded or abandoned on the roadsides. The drivers cave been unable to proceed in the face of the huge snowdrifts piled up. by the bowling gale. Springfield, Illinois, reports that 600 cars have been lost in tho snowdrifts, some of which are ten feet high. Some small town newspapers are depending on the wireless for their news, all the wires being down. Several places in western Canada report that the mercury is 40 degrees below zero.

36 Deaths in Middle West States

TRAVELLERS STORMBOUND Received Friday, 7.40 p.m. CHICAGO, Dec. 19. Thirty-six persons are known to bo dead as the result of lashing snow storms and bitter cold in the Middle Western States. Transportation and communication is disrupted over a wido area. Seven died in Chicago city, where business is disorganised. The hotels are packed with people who are unatile to reach their homes. Under cover of the impenetrable curtain of snow, six prisoners manhandled their guard and escaped from the Cook County gaor W the heart of the city. Three of the escapees are recorded asdesperate. The Great Lakes traffic is seriously retarded.
