COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Dannevirke County Council was held yesterday. Present were Mr. A. Galloway (chairman), Crs. J. Peters, H. Friderickson, S. Mitchell, A. B. Hansen, J. Miller and Mr. G. Hams (engineer). Leave of absence was granted Cr. J. Castles.

f The J Public Workß Department wrote advising the remittance of the Highways Board subsidy, totalling £2llß 15s 7.. The Public Works Department wrote regarding the surveyors! account for redrafting Mangahu road. —Passed for payment. The No. 5 District Highways Council approved plans for tarsealing.

The Department of Health wrote regarding necessary alterations to a dwelling in Tipapakuku. The Lands Department wrote regarding the closing of a road in Mangatoro block (Crown lands). A road in lieu of this had been surveyed to give access to a number of sections known as the Okarae block, shortly to be offered to the public for selection. The department stated that it was proposed to commence forthwith the formation of the new road, which is slightly to the south of the one under review.

Or.' Frederickson thought that the council should consider these Toads before giving permission to carry out alterations. The council might have to take them over. On his motion it was decided that the Lands Department be asked to put any bridges required in concrete in conformity with' the principles of the council. A letter was received from the, Hawke’s Bay County Council regarding the allocation of heavy traffic fees and advising that the sum of £230 3s 7d Had been allotted to the council. Mr. P. W. Dorrington wrote on behalf of Mr. A. Hyde, claiming- damages arising out of a collision with a vehicle then on County Council business, It was decided that .the chairman and town clerk report on the matter to the next mooting.

The Motoa and Mangatoro school oonimittees complained of the excessive speed of motor lorries. The chairman said that it was not right when mothers of school children had to live in terror all day on account of the danger from the speeding of motor vehicles. It was ppinted out that heavily loaded lorries were in the habit of travelling at excessive speeds.---It was decided to leave the engineer, to put the traffic inspector on the job. Tho ranger’s report was read and received. Engineer’s Report.

The engineer’s report read as follows: —The roadman in Dannevirke riding has been filling pot holes , on Tamaki river, Kumeti, Bua Boa, Kaukuku and Freeland’s roads; while the. grader had raked in metal on Tamaki river road, and the lorries have, done metal patching on Princess and Oadman streets; also Tamaki river road. Mangatoro riding; J. Buddick has completed his metal contract on Waitahora road. The roadman has renewed two culverts on Otope road, and attended to watertables on the same road, besides cleaning watertables on Mangakak&ho road and raking in metal on Totaramanga road. The grader was 5$ days- cleaning watertables and taking off the outside edge of Otope road. The lorries have done some patching o» Wi Duncan’s road.

Tiratu riding: The lorries have delivered 46 yards metal on Victoria road. The-roadman has put in new; pipe culverts on Cowper’s, Railway and Victoria Toads, and attended to surface work on Tiratu and Cowper’s roads.

Ngapaeruru riding: The concrete gang ha-ve now completed the concrete bridge known as Affleck’s on- Mangaho road. The roadman. has been cleaning watertables and filling pot holes on Mangapuaka, To Uri, Speedy’s and Pokokomuka roads, and raked in metal on Mangahe and Tutarewa roads. Tho grader was two days on Speedy’s road. Ormondville riding: The lorries have delivered 3S yards of metal on Newling’s road, and the roadmen have been cleaning watertables on Waikopiro, Maunga, Ahiwelta and Bangitota roads.

Norsewood riding: The lorries have done some metal patching on To Whita and Third Line roads, and the grader has oleaned watertables and raked in metal on Ngamoko, Third Line, Garfield and Manawatu roads. The roadman his done some metal patching on Ngamoko and Gundrie’s roads, and attended to surface work on Third Lino and Makaretu river road.

Matamau riding: The, grader has raked in metal on the following roads: Tororua, Tataramoa, France and Blairgowrie. The roadman has widened sharp 1 corner on Tataramoa road, and cleaned watertables on France and Tororua roads.

Napier-Wellington highway: The tarsealing gang have completed the second coat (bitumen) between Mangate-wai-iti bridge and Matamau school: also the second coat on what is known as Piri Piri deviation, besides the first coat sealing on Matamau deviation and overhead bridge at Piri Piri. The grader has been 10£ days raking in metal and truing up road. During the month the county lorries have deliver-

ed 468 yards chips, besides 103 yards of maintenance metal.

Weber highway: The grader has been 11 days Taking in. metal and truing up .road. ,The lorries have attended to pot holes; and the roadmen have been attending to _ surface wort. The bridge contractor for the bridge over the Mangatera stream has now got the piles made, and has .completed the foundation of one pier.

Whetukura highway! Have had some metal patching done on this highway, and the-, roadman has been attending to surface work.

Matamau highway! The roadman has been attending to spot holes and: surface: work, and the grader has 'Taked in.metal. \

Ongaha-Mangatoro Valley highway: Have had a team patching far end of this highway,,and tho roadman has attended,to surface , work,, while the grader has been 2J days, raking, in metal.

Woodville-Law’s road highway:. The grader has been 3$ days raking in metal, an.d the roadman has attendod to surface work, —Adopted. Cr. Miller asked how the regulations stood, regarding the licensing of hawkers. The county clerk said that a hawker had to pay his license fe.e in each county. Councillors thought that one license fee should cover all counties. :

It was resolved to write to tho Woodville County Council asking that body to contribute to the cost of maintenance of the Otope road -where two residents were paying rates to the Woodville County, while the'properties fronted on to a road maintained by the Dannevirko County, Council. ' On Cr. Frederickson's’ motion, it was decided to write to the member for the district asking that the revaluation of the county be hurried on.

Cr. Mitchell asked that a detailed statement of the riding expenditures be shown on the orders for each councillor. It was docided that the numbers of tho vouchers be shown. . Cr. Fredefickson said that he noticed there was a voucher for £lO for street lighting. He hoped this .did not include Town Board lights. The engineer explained that the council contributed to a portion of tho street lighting in Norsewood. Cr. Frederickson did not think that the board’s lighting should be a burden on the county. It was left in Cr. Hansen’s. hands to look into the matter and report. Cr. Hansen said that the Norsewood Town Board’asked for the use of the council’s plant for tar-sealing the footpaths. It was decided to grant this at the County Council rate. 1 Accounts totalling £2749 9s 3d were passed for payment. - The chairman extended to councillors and the'staff the season’s greetings and Cr. Frederickson returned greetings on behalf of the' councillors.

The widow said at the .inquest there was no work for cabmen nowadays and her husband had to sell his horse.
