Base Agents at Dunedin Speak for Fake Suicide
BROPHY HAD NO INTRIGUE.
Per Press Association,
DUNEDIN, Last Night. Relative to the cable about Richard Brophy, formerly second in command of the Byrd Expedition, Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co., base-agents for the ex* pedition, state that there is no truth in tho assertion that an intrigue with a Broadway actress caused the dismissal of Brophy. He was not dismissed/ but suffered a severe breakdown in Dunedin and during the period of his incapacity, was unfit to handle the expedition’s affairs,, so that his resignation was accepted. There was no ques•tion of . misdemeanour, only unnecessary expenditure, arising from Brophy’s illness. Commander Byrd was, and ie, much concerned over Brophy’s welfare in the future. In the early stages of the. expedition, Brophy proved an efficient organiser, rendering inestimable service.
