Waiata
The Waiata-Aratika Literary and Debating Society held its last meeting of the season at Waiata on Monday evening. The meetings, which have been held monthly throughout the winter, have been well attonded and debates, on a great variety of subjects, were held, all members of the society taking an active part.
The wind-up meeting took tho form of a mock election, Mr. R. W. Brown presiding over a large attendance. Tho various candidates for Parliamentary honours brought somo novel and amusing proposals for the management of the country’s affairs. Upon the ballot being taken, the Liberal party was voted into power on the easting vote of the chairman. The following Cabinet was selected: Prime Minister anci Minister of Ifinance, Mr. J. Bain; Minister of Defence, Mr. G. Grierson; Minister of Lands, Miss R. Billett; Minister of Native Affairs, Miss W. Dawson; Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. E. Billett; Minister of Customs, Mr. H. Jenson; Chief Government Whip, Mr. R. Wylie. Leader of tho Opposition, Mr. J. Dawson (Labour). Leader of the Reform party, Mr. M. Snell. The High Commissioner, Mr. Nat Peat, gave an account of his stewardship, and, on the motion of tho leader of the Opposition, was accorded a vote of noconfidence, which was carried by acclamation.
Refreshments supplied by the ladies, brought a very pleasant evening to a close. It was ddcidod to hold the first meeting of the now season at Waiata on the last Monday in March.
