BOROUGH COUNCIL TO SELL CHURCH ST. LAND
SPECIAL ORDER NECESSARY. The Auditor-General advised the Palmerston North Borough Council last evening of the procedure that must be adopted if it was desired to dispose ot the land adjacent the Club hotel. A special order was necessary, but not an Grder-in-Council. The proceeds of sale were required to be held and applied towards the purchase of other lands to be held for the same purposes as affected the lands disposed of. The Council could not devote the proceeds of any such sale towards the repayment of the loan raised for the purchase of the land now held or for the repayment of any ether loan raised by the council for any similar purpose, viz. the loan to extend the present Municipal Chambers or the loan raised under the authority of the Palmerston North Librarj- Empowering Act, 1927. In order to divert the moneys held on account of the sale to another purpose, it would be necessary for the council to obtain special legislation. The Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) said he thought that would be the position. Nothing could be done without legislation and it seemed it would be too late to do anything this session.
Cr. G. Tremaine urged that the order be obtained and in the event of a sale, the money could be placed on deposit. The town clerk intimated that the order referred to consisted of a resolution of the council advertised for one month. Cr. Hansford supported the proposal of Cr. Tremaine and the couueil adopted the suggestion.
