EARTHQUAKE FUND! CONCERT. From Our Own Correspondent. On Friday evening, the haU was the venue of the most successful funotion held here for some time, when a concert and dance was given by local and Palmerston amateurs in aid of the earthquake fund. Visitors were present from Palmerston, Tokomaru, Shannon and other places. The amount raised was in excess of £3O. For the auctioneering of the produce given by local residents, Mr. Bert Waldegrave, of Palmerston North, ably officiated. The total amount raised from this source was £B. There was very spirited bidding for a drake, which realised over £4.
The winners of the various guessing competitions were: —Ham, Mr. Andy Moyes; doll, Mrs. A. Terry; case of apples, Mr. Ben Sutherland; dinner, Mrs. .Bussell; workbasket, Mr. 0. Batchelor. The concert programme consisted of individual items and three short oneact playettes, which were well received and reflected great credit on the performers. Those taking part were: — Piano solo, Miss Green; dance, school children; recitation, Miss Mary Knife; song, Miss Roberts (Pohangina); dance, Miss Connie Ongley (Palmerston North); Christmas play by school children; violin solo, Miss M. Lynch (Tiritea); recitation, Master Neil Beckitt; song, Miss Green; dance, Master Ray Gooch and Geo. Hampson; song, Mr. Roberts (Pohangina). Those taking part in the playette3 were:—“ Married Love,’’ Misses B. Craw and E. Currin and Mrs. Cliffe Wilson; ‘‘Truthful James,” Miss D. Craw and Messrs B. Sutherland and W. Mills; "A Broken Engagement,” Mrs. Nash; Mrs. Lynch; Misses N.
