WAIRARAPA DEFEATS MANAWHENUA 37---16

Ranfurly Shield Challenge Shield Holders Score Fast in Final Stages Wairarapa. on Saturday sustained its third challenge tor the Kanfurly Shield by defeating Manawhenua 37—16. The challengers more than held their own during the first ' spell, when they were playing with a wind of gale force at their Lacks. The half-time interval found Manawhenua holding the advantage 13—8, but the live points margin proved quite insufficient to carry it through. Even after the change-over, the combined team fully held its own for a period, but in the final stages of the game Wairarapa literally swamped it. The brilliance of Cooke, combined with the cleverness of Mill and Cundy s great kicking piled up a big score that Manawhenua never looked like overtaking. T. Parata proved a great leader for the challengers’ forwards and was perhaps the best forward on the ground. The heavy wind made combined rearguard work very difficult and the greatest part of the game was of a loose-forward nature. .Wairarapa forwards secured possession from the majority of the scrums and line-outs.

The Teams. The teams lined out: — Manawhenua (red, white and blue): Johnston, Strange, Fletcher, Page, .Riddell, Bevan, W. Parata, T. Parata, Miles, Dalziell, Conrad, Tatana, Parsons, Crawford, Summers. Wairarapa (dark green): Itoack, Cundy, Stringfellow, Cooke, Corkill, Fuller, Mill, Donald, Olliver, Beid, Harvey, S. Willoughby, M. Willoughby, McGregor, Beside.

retaliated, and Cundy broke away to beat the defence within 15 yards of the line. A score seemed imminent when Fletcher came across and threw the big winger out of touch. In the resulting scrummages, Conrad and Tatana were prominent and colours succeeded in driving back the invaders into neutral territory. The relief w r as only temporary and in a scrummage on the challengers’ twenty-five ;line, Cooke secured from Mill, beat the defenders completely and scored between the posts. Fuller converted.—Manawhenua 8, Wairarapa 8. Manawhenua Regains Lead.

The Game. Manawhenua won the toss and WaiTarapa set the ball in motion, A good mark by Johnston early in the piece stemmed a Wairarapa rush and colours forced play downfield, where the shieldholders were penalised on their twentyfive line. Fletcher, with the wind behind him, put the challengers three points up in as many minutes' play. —• Manawhenua 3, Wairarapa nil. From half-w'ay, Wairarapa forced the pace and was awarded a penalty well out. Fuller did not attempt to add points and such was the force of the wind that the ball was blown back over the heads of the forwards. Lining out at half-way, Mill attempted to shoot the ball back to the WairaTapa rearguard, but the Colours’ forwards broke and swamped the movement in its inception. Over-vigorous kicking by Manawhenua saw touch in goal, but from the drop-out,' the challengers' backs swept into action. The movement was halted when Fletcher was caught in possession and a welcome free kick to Wairarapa enabled Cooke to find the line at the twenty-ifiv-e.

In the resulting exchanges, both sets of backs commenced to handle the ball to better effect and a couple of strong thrusts by Page put Manawhenua well inside Wairarapa territory. A scrum was sent down in the corner, but a free kick to greens enabled Cooke to clear.

Manawhenua continued to press, however, and its backs came away in a promising rush that saw another scrum on the Wairarapa line. Colours secured and Bevan was given a transfer but was caught in possession. Indecision on the part of the Manawhenua backs saw the attack temporarily stemmed, but colours had their reward when their forwards stove, in the defence and Miles fell on the ball over the line. Fletcher again made no mistake with the kick—Manawhenua 13, Wairarapa 8. Bight on the half-time whistle Manawhenua was given a penalty well out for obstruction and Fletcher made a good but unsuccessful attempt to add a further three points. Second Spell. When the teams filed out after the interval, Bramwell had replaced W. Parata behind the scrum. Early in the piece, with a character-

Manawhenua continued to press and T. Parata and Conrad led a strong forward rush that was only stemmed by an infringement. Again Cooke found the line and when Manawhenua invaded onee more, lined well up-field. Working back to half-way, Wairarepa forwards took the ball at their toe and a kick found Johnston out of place. M. Willoughby chased the leather across, but Johnston saved by kicking behind the dead ball line. An exchange of kicking saw the challengers back at half-way, where T. Parata broke away and was nearly through when he gave a forward transfer to Dalzicll. Colours held their advantage and a high kick from Fuller, which was blown back, nearly spelt disaster, when Bevan and Strange broke through to harry Cooke and Poach.

istic kick, Cooke found touch in the corner ten yards from the Manawhenua line, but after some strenuous scrummaging, colours cleared. In a moment, however, the green rearguard had opened up and

C., Stringfellow / Sringfellow and Fuller raced away. Johnston rose to the occasion and grassed Stringfellow, but Manawhenua had some anxious moments until a force down came. The relief was short-lived, for the green tide came sweeping back and from a scrummage Reid gave a transfer to Cundy to give the winger an easy try. Fuller missed the kick. —Manawhenua 13, Wairarapa 11.

Manawhenua’s Reply. Manawhenua’s reply was immediate and to the point. A strong forward drive worked play downfield, where Tatana and Conrad, led the colours to the assault. Wairarapa was badly worried and could not stop Parata when he secured and smashed his way over by the posts. Fletcher missed the kick.—Manawhenua 16, Wairarapa 11. Wairarapa instituted a counterattack from the half-way kick. Fuller made an unsuccessful attempt to turn a penalty to account. A scries of lineouts and scrums saw colours work cigar and Johnston forced down after a high kick that was carried over the line. Aggin play settled down in the same area, until the green backs secured possession and handled nicely as far as Cooke, who was hauled down by Riddell. A moment later, the shield-hold-ers’ flying squad tried again but Stringfellow threw away what appeared a certain try by placing his pass at Cundy’s feet. Green backs were showing up better, however, and Mill and Stringfellow handed on to Fuller to send tho winger over in the other corner. Fuller’s kick fell under the bar. —Manawhenua 16, Wairarapa 14.

The crowd rose as the Wairarapa backs secured possession and Cooke cut through the opposition right to the full-back. Johnston was equal to the emergency, however, and upended the Wairarapa star at the critical moment. .The ball trickled clear, but Fuller failed to pick up and the Manawhenua forwards cleared. Wairarapa continued to press, however, and J. Donald snapped up in the Tuck to send the greens away. The ball was lost in tho scrummage, but in a flash, Mill had picked up and dived over. Fuller missed the kick.—Manawhenua 3, WaiKarapa 3.

Manawhenua Leads. In a moment, Manawhenua had swept play to the other end of the ground and a solid forward rush saw Parsons battle over with two defenders dragging him down. Fletcher converted with a beautiful kick.—Manajvhenua 8, Wairarapa 3. Play settled down in mid-field, but fumbling by the Wairarapa backs enabled Riddell to dash through and break up an incipient attack. Short passing between Harvey, McGregor and Stringfellow was stemmed in tho nick of time and Johnston, with tho wind behind him, booted one hundred gnd fifty yards into touch in goal. From neutral territory, where play bad been hovering, Strange secured and beating Cijpke, was forced into touch by Poach when nearly over at the corner.

Fast Scoring. From half-way Mill secured and cut through the ruck to make an opening that saw J. Donald score behind the posts. Fuller added the extra points. —Wairarapa 19, Manawhenua 16. In the lead for the first time during the game, Wairarapa commenced to throw the leather about in improved fashion. The green forwards took up the attack and Reid and M. Willoughby booted the leather through at the corner, where Willoughby was forced iDto touch. Driven back, Wairarapa was given a free kick in front of goal, but Fnller’3 kick lacked direction.

Wairarapa forced again and a series of scrummages just outside the Wairarapa twenty-five saw Mana.whenua forwards dominating. Two free ~picks gave relief to the greens, but Manawhenua came hack and Stringfellow was called on to clear. Wairarapa eventually raised the siege and Johnston took a mark in the teeth of a rush, while Page followed the kick and gained ground with a determined run. Is a jnom entj .Wairarapa had

Cooke, Stringfellow and Cundy were associated in a fast Tearguard movement that was only stemmed by lack of room.

Greens continued to press, however, and a solid Wairarapa forward rush saw Gorki]] go down on the ball under a press of forwards. Cundy converted. —Wairarapa 24, Manawheaual 16.

The Wairarapa supporters did not display any marked optimism, a minute or two later when Cundy placed the ball 15 yards on the Manawhenua side of half-way and prepared to attempt a penalty kick. Contrary to expectations, the green winger got his distance and sent the leather sailing between the posts.—Wairarapa 27, Manawhenua IG. Tho greens had found their level and a moment later Cooke chased the ball from the twenty-five line to score his second try. Cundy converted with another great kick.—Wairarapa 32, Manawhenua 16.

Manawhenua had appeared slightly dazed by this sudden onslaught, but recovered sufficiently to retaliate for a period in both backs and forwards. The challengers could not hold their hard won territory, however, and back at half-way, Mill sent his rearguard racing through the blues. Stringfellow completed with Cundy outside him. Cundy converted with a magnificent kick; —Wairarapa 37, Manawhenua 16. The closing stages of the game saw Manawhenua come up for a short period and Biddell, favoured by a rebound nearly snatched the try from Corkill. Wairarapa rallied and play was back at half-way when time was called. Mr. T. Fletcher, of Wellington, was referee.
