RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL

COMPREHENSIVE GROUND IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. ■With, one object in -view, and that of making the grounds at the new Russell street school the most attractive of any school in Palmerston North, a comprehensive scheme has been drawn up and the work will be carried out gradually. Already over 100 square yards have been laid so the children may have a dry place to assemble. The football ground has been trenched to lay the pipes which will assure this area being reasonably dry in the wettest weather. Digging has been done along the front and side boundary fences and a belt of ornamental shrubs will be planted during the term holidays commencing on Friday next. The girls’ basketball court already shows scars on its surface where an energetic working bee has commenced operations. As all the work is being done by voluntary labour, an appeal is made to residents in the Russell Street School area to rally round the committee and so lighten the work for all concerned. At the present time excavation work is being done by shovels. What is badly required but unfortunately is not in sight is a horso and scoop. All workers are well cared for by the ladies of tho committee, who supply afternoon tea. The work is not taken too seriously and affords an afternoon’s fun. Several workers went as far as suggesting doing a bit by moonlight. These energetic people have also worked three consecutive Saturday afternoons. At present in Russel street is tho world’s “muddiest school’’ and it is for this reason that workers are so keen to get as much done in the shortest possible time. Volunteers are wanted for Saturday and Wednesday afternoons and all those who are willing to assist may leave their names with Mr D. Morrison (chaiman of the school committee) ’phone 6241 or 5163 or with Mr E. R. Harris (president of ithc Russell Street School Parents’ Association) ’phones 5364 or 6199).
