A Hill Twilight

Beyond the verge of evening, dim and cool, The altars of the hill are bright, And sunset winds in chorus chant The vespers of the night. The twilight with its benediction breathes On village homes and trodden ways, And through the meadows in the dusk Brooks sing their evening praise. Grey roads that knew the fret and din of toil Now turn like paths of dreams afar To drowsy vales where slumber keeps Watch with the evening star. By road and lane the tall trees guarding stand Where dusky homesteads muse and dream, And through the shadows with a word of peace The golden- home lights gleam! —Arthur Wallace Peach.
