THE CORRIEDALE

I : ASA FAT SHEEP. It is well known in the South Island of New Zealand that this dual purpose sheep, not only produces a heavy fleece of half-bred wool of great quality arid value, and at the same time if the trufe type of Corriedale is bred from i.e., a sheep with bold outlook, good back, well-sprung Tibs, and well-developed thighs, the result will be a carcass of mutton or lamb that will equal in quality that of any other breed of sbeep. An illustration that this statement is in accordance with fact, has just come to hand from Australia. At the Sydney Sheep Show and sales held this month, the champion prize for the most valu-able-pen of sbeop or lambs was awarded by the judge (Mr. A. Amos, of Ash field), to a pen of magnificent Corriedale wethers, bred by Messrs. M. Carroll and Sons, of Bcdbank, Molong. In the opinion of the judge, and very many other breeders of fat sheep, these were the bulkiest, sappiest and best proportioned sheep ever seen at a Sydney Sheep Show. Senator J. F. Guthrie, of Geelong, whose pen of five Corriedale cross wethers secured reserve champion, warmly congratulated Messrs. Carroll and Sons on their great achievement. In South America one of the favourite crosses for the production of fat sheep and lambs for export to Great Britain is the cross between Corriedale rams and Boraney cross owes. This also is a favourite cross in Canterbury and Otago, whore it is rocognised as producting a very fine quality of mutton and lamb.

The Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society has docidcd to reinstate the dates, Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17, for its spring show, instead of Wednesday and Thursday, October 23 and 24, as had been suggested, owing to tho latter dates clashing with the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Jubliec show.
