Commercial Travellers' Ball

The commercial travellers need no introduction to Palmerstonians, they have a superb way of their own of extending their genial hospitality and when the year rolls round for them again to undertake the task of entertaining, they set to with a vim that is excelled by no other organisation. The entertainment hail and lounge room at the Showgrounds last evening almost took one’s breath away, with the beauty and taste displayed by the decorations. The huge hall was a picture ,with hundreds of twinkling lights and multi-coloured streamers, latticed shades, Chinese lanterns, and fernery. At no time has the hall been seen to such advantage 'as it was seen last evening. The G.T.’s spare no expense, their one thought being to please the public. The orchestra was placed at the far end of the hall, in a most artistic and picturesque green house. The sides of the walls were latticed, and ferned and lanterned and the hundreds of dancers were made feel as gay as the colouring. The sitting out room was carpeted and had cosy chairs and lounges. The supper room, too, was the work of an artist, for never have the tables been so prettily arranged, or so lavishly ar rayed. Apart from the general workers, those most responsible for the supreme effort made, were the president, Mr. J. Danks, past president, E. A. Metcalf, vice-presidents, Messrs B. Marsack, W. J. Day and a committee comprising Messrs P. S. Rabone, H. Robinson, A. Stewart, W. McKegg, R. C. Batchelor, H. Bedstone, J. Forsythe, W. Waters, L. Thompson, the secretary, Mr. J. C. Brown an’d the treasurer, Mr. E. J. Mathews Mr. A. Allen, of Gisborne, it was who planned and originated the decorative scheme. The novelties and favours were J special feature of the evening. Larkin’s orchestra left nothing in the way of music to be desired.
