Borotra concentrated for reaching tho net, but Cochin’s accurate roturns often passed Borotra. " ' ' ‘ The latter frequently foot-faulted. Ho made a fine effort to retrieve tho position in the third sc-t, making splendid cross-court shots, but Cochet marvellously got there and . his returns found Borotra out of position. Tlio crowd, which loves Borotra s sportiveness and gaiety, cheered him on to greater efforts and he gallantly raPied when Cochet stood at 4—l. Cochet was temporarily nonplussed but recovered steadily and Borotra s rally failed.

YOUNGSTERS’ SPARKLING TENNIS.

LONDON, July 6. Tho weather was unfavourable for ho finals at Wimbledon, being dull, chilly and showery. Nevertheless, tho centre court was crowded to capacity. Tho spectators found the day’s greatest thrill in the five-set struggle young England versus young America in which Allison and Van Ryn defeated Gregory and Collins, but tho margin was only three games. The Americans captured the first set comfortably before the Englishmen got into their stride after which it was a sparkling hard-hitting, thrilling fight. The match was decided in the third game of .the fifth set when tho Americans for the first time in the match collared Col lins’ service. , . Showers fell intermittently throughout tho three last sets. Tho whole quartette covered themselves with glory, but the most notable revelation and probably the deciding factor was tho strongth of Allison’s servico which nonplussed Collins throughout. HELEN TOO GOOD FOR OPPONENT. LONDON, July 5.

In tho final of the ladies’ singles, Miss Jacobs was unable to extend Miss Helen Wills, so the match was disappointing. _ The defeat of Cochet and Miss Bennett, which was a real surprise, was largely due to the way in which Miss Joan Fry stood up to Cochet’s cross driving in the closing stages.
