FIRE CAUSES HEAVY DAMAGE IN WELLINGTON

Per Press AssociationWELLINGTON, Last Night. An outbreak of fire in the building of A. and T. Burt Ltd., hardware dealers, Courtenay Place, on Saturday night, caused considerable damage before tho brigade succeeded in gaining* control. , , , , Tho fire already had a good kora when the alarm was given at 6.40 p.m. A very large crowd soon assembled to watch the operations of the brigade which brought eight machines into ma. The building is of brick with an iron roof and two floors. The fire, which evidently started in the packing room, was at its worst ai the rear of the building where the work house is situated. In order to cope with it the brigade operated largely from York street and after working for an hour and a half thajr managed to suppress the outbreak and prevent it from spreading 'to adjoining buildings. Considerable damage by fine and water had been caused although had the stock been other than hardware more damage would have resulted. Tho insurances are not available.
