Te Awamutu Centre Has Remarkable Record

Dm-ing the visit to Te Awamutu recently of the Minister of Internal Affairs, figures were pi-eparecl to show

the importance of Te Awamutu as a

training centre, in support of the request for a second totalisator permit preferred by the Waipa Racing Club. During the season fast drawing to a close, no less than six horses have topped the £I,OOO mark in stake money. Indeed, the remarkable aggregate of this sextette— Prodice, Desert Glow, Pegaway, Supremacy, Aussie and Siaosi—is £15,298.

It is doubtful if any other one training centre in the Dominion can boast such a formidable list, especially in

view of the fact that 95 per cent, of the above total was won within the Auckland Province. During the present racing season horses trained on the course liav“ accounted for 66 firsts, 56 seconds, and 34 thirds. In this total is included trotting honours, namely, 9 firsts, 10 seconds, and 3 thirds. For the 1927-28 season the totals were 47 firsts, 49 seconds, and 29 thirds.

The claim that more horses are trained in Te Awamutu than at any otlier club’s course in the Auckland Province may .be supported with the statement that in the best month of

the present term there were actually 63 horses for which, training fees were paid. Just now it is .the slack season, but last month's total was 43. The total winnings so far this season soar to the splendid aggregate of £22,810 10s for gallopers alone, captured by the following teams:— £ F. E. Loomb 9,154 A. Cook 4,850 W. Stone .. 4,175

It should be noted that the £22,810 10s does xiot include stake earnings of the trotters, which must' have easily exceeded £I,OOO, or the money gained by Mx - . H. Loomb’s stable is easily the best he has ever achieved, but that he has been consistently successful since making Te Awamutu his headquarters is borne out by the fact that in.-the eight seasons the stake winnings of horses trained by him aggregate between £46,000 and £47,000 —truly a splendid performance. Trainers Cook, Stone and Paul have also each created records this season, and tho x-esults achieved speak volumes for the suitability of Te Awamutu as a training centre.
