PLANT CULTURE

DOMINION CONFERENCE GATHERING IN AUCKLAND. EDUCATION TO BE CONSIDERED. Delegates from all parts of New Zealand will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, which will be held in the Uni--1 varsity College hall next Wednesday. The president, Mr. F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, will preside, and it is expected that the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, will open the conference. On the day following the opening of the conference it is proposed to tour the city parks with the Parks Com- ■ mittcc of the City Council. All the I* members of the council have been invited to inspect the proposed botanic garden site in the Outer Domain and j around the museum. ] Agricultural education will be one of j the first matters for the considcratior jof the assembled delegates. The discussion will deal mainly with the horti cultural side of the subject. It is I noteworthy that 110 diplomas havo been granted without examination in recognition of horticultural knowledge and experience. The latest diplomas arc those awarded to Dr. W. S. Hill, of the Technical College staff, and Mr. J. Morrison, of Warkworth. Another important question to be considered is that of plant registration, together with the nomenclature of fruit, flowers and vegetables, which, it is suggested, should be controlled by the institute. Other remits deal with national botanic gardens, road beautifications and the regular publication of a national horticultural journal. It was decided to invite Mr. H. Morse, the world-famous rosarian, to deliver an address on the occasion of his visit to Auckland later this month. Mr. G. L. Wilson, the noted Irish daffodil raiser, will be in Auckland in September, ami it was decided to ask him to deliver an address while in this city.
