MONTHLY MEETING O? BOARD Or DIRECTORS.

Tlio monthly meeting of 1 lie Y.M.C.A. board of directors was held last evening. The following were present:— Messrs. D. T. Allan (chairman), R. C, Donald, J. H. Dick, C. E. Histed, J. E .Cunninghame, I. Gcrrand, A Hopwood, Rev. J. E. Parsons, J. Sclwyn, J. A. Grant, J. C. Young, P. Hunt Apologies were received from Messis. J. Wallace, T. E. Ilodder and S. Kingston.

The general report stated that the activities during the past month had been well maintained and that the large amount of voluntary service given in promoting and carrying out the mass of detail was a sure sign of a healthy and vigorous membership. The general secretary reported that the Optimists’ club still eoutinued to liourish, the weekly meetings at C.

and C. ’s for lunch and fellowship be* ing well attended, having an average of 2S. The quality of the talks given I by various speakers is of a high standard. The members of the dub donated i'.'J 11s 3d to the Mayor's earthquake fund. The educational committee reported that the newly-formed Debating club promised to be a strong feature in the programme. The second meeting of this club since its inception was held in the board room on Friday, June 28, with 23 members present. On this occasion the evening was taken up by impromptu speeches, the subjects being many and varied, humorous and serious and a [most enjoyable and educational evening was spent by all. Mr. A. Campbell was in the chair, while Mr. J. A. Colquhoun acted as critic. Mr. Colquhoun, in summing up, expressed himself as being very pleased with the quality of the speeches and predicted a successful season for the club. The subject for the next debate to be held Friday, July 12, is “That at the present time New Zealand should build no more railways.” The negative is being led by Mr. N. Hardic, with Mr. R. C. Donald as seconder and the affirmativo by Mr. A. E. Wright, with Mr. J. Dempsey as seconder. Through the activities of both the Optimists’ and Debating clubs a definite educational impact is undoubtedly being made upon our members. The religious committee reported that the pleasant Sunday afternoon services held in iiie lounge fill a definite need amongst members and the subjects discussed threw a helpful light upon the many vital social problems of to-day.

The social committee reported that both the lounge and billiard room arc freely used by members as social centres, and that the wireless set which has been thoroughly overhauled is now in perfect working order and once again is a distinct asset to the programme. The thanks of the association are due to three members of the board of directors for the time and money spent in bringing the wireless set up to date. This committee intends to organise a social to be held Wednesday, July 17. The result of the billiard tournament finals places C. 31c31'inn as winner of the trophy. The report of the boys' work committee shows that the all-round programme is being efficiently participated in. It is the intention of this depart- I

ment to organise during the last week of this month “Parents Week” when all boys’ classes with their various activities will be open to inspection by parents and friends. During May, a party of twenty Wellington Y.M.C.A, boys paid a visit to the association. A return visit is being organised in which 10 primary school boys and 10 high school boys will pay a return visit to the Wellington association at an early date. The physical culture committee showed the attendances at the various classes during the past month totalled 17-J<3, as against 16.16 for the same period last year. It is the intention of the committee to call a meeting at an early date for all members interested in the formation of a cricket club. The physical committee is particularly anxious that the Y.M.C.A should be represented in the field of sport. The report shows that some of . the classes have already commenced practice work for the coming gymnastic carnival in October, wdiilst Die : remainder will start training during the coming week. The opportunity was taken by the 1 chairman to welcome tho Rev. J. E. 1 Parsons on his first attendance as a 1 member of tho board of directors, rc- ' presenting the Council of Christian Congregations. '
