BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AND FINE CHILDREN
GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S PRAISE.
Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Night. Their excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson were entertained at luncheon by tho Mayor and Council to-day. His Excellency, in tho course of his. reply to the Mayor’s address, said that when they came to New Zealand first, they desired to make the acquaintance of the people of tho land in which they had lived in their yotlth. They had visited every part of the Dominion. They had felt very much at home and who would not, amongst such kindly people ? They admired the climate and scenery and appreciated all the wonderful ithings in New Zealand. 'As strangers, they found great beauty in the country, which perhaps residents failed to see, because pf their familiarity with .it. Every day of their lives was filled with the interests of the country and the people. He felt it would take a lifetime, instead of live years, to appreciate everything. He took great interest in'the children. It was always their pleasure to visit thorn and to encourage their training. They had never met such children as they did in New 1 Zealiand because they wore so natural, so simply confident and so well-mannered, that one could make friends with them at once. On this, the teachers and educational authorities should bo complimented. They left New Zealand with regret and only because of duties at home which called them insistently. His Excellency visited lona College this afternoon and addressed the girls thero. Last evening her Excellency gave an address to tho Women’s Community club. This evening his Excellency was the guest of the Orphans’ club. To-morrow their Excellencies leave for Wellington.
