Halcombe.
LADIES HOCKEY. From Our Own Correspondent. The Halcombe Athletics played against Waituna on Wednesday afternoon. Messrs. T. F. Iwikau and McFarlane refereed the game which ended in a draw of 1 all. The visitors wore afterwards entertained at an enjoyable afternoon tea. Tho Marton Athletic A, and the Tokorangi teams played at Tokorangi, Messrs. McKoy and Hcrdman having control of the whistle. The match ended in a draw with no score on cither side. The Haleoinbe, Hinemoa and Marton B teams were scheduled to play on the Marton Park, but owing to the grounds being under water, the match was postponed. The local men’s hockey team journeyed to Feilding, where they played against the Pirates. The match ended in a draw, i all. Eugby. The local junior team played Huntervillc on the Eccreation grounds. Mr. W. S. Pago had control, Huntorville winning by 21 points to nil. Horticultural Society. A meeting of the Horticultural society was held on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr W. McLennan presiding. Business in hand was tho drawing up of the Bulb Show schedule and arranging the date of the show. It was decided to donate tho sum of £S to each church connected with the society. Tho date of tho Bulb Show was fixed for September 18. It was also decided to hold a “baby show” in connection with the function, and to include classes for needlework, in addition to the usual classes for flowers, vegetables, etc. It was dc- [ cided to approach the Rev. McDonald of tho Presbyterian Church, Feilding, with a view to opening the show. It was discussed among the leaders of the various churches as to the advisability of commencing a relief fund for tho various victims of the earthquake areas, and it was decided to hold a general meeting of the public on Friday night in the Methodist Sunday school. Mr J. Heappey headed tho list with a donation of £5, tho Horticultural society following with a donation of one guinea. General. Several eases of scarlet fever have been notified around our district, the disease at the present time being in a mild form.
Tho Rev. Thoraley has for some days past been indisposed from an attack of influenza, but is now on the mend. An effort is being made to reorganise the gymnasium club, arrangements having been made to meet for practise every Monday evening in the local hall.
