125-FOOT STATUE OF THE SAVIOUR
A great statue of Christ, to watch over Itio do Janeiro from a 2200-fuot hill commanding the harbour and city, is being built on Corcovado (Hunchback) Peak, and will be finished in two years. f- '-i’his 125-i'oot figure, which with its'
pedestal will reach .150 feet above the famous Hunchback, will vie with New York’s Statue of Liberty in prominence, and will surpass greatly in size the Christ ol' the Andes, which stands on the border of Chile and Argentina as a symbol of., perpetual peace between those nations. A fund'of*£l44,ooo, which the statue will cost; is being collected by the Catholic Centre of the city. Work was begun two years ago. Thirty workmen
arc putting up the ironrvork for tho reinforced concrete pedestal and body, over which will be placed- a surface of bluc-grcen tiles.
