CHATEAU TONGARIRO BUILDING PROGRESS

OPENING IN NOVEMBER. AUCKLAND, June 19. | ' Chateau Tongariro, in the course of construction on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, is so far advanced that it will be used during the winter to accommodate the overflow of visitors to Whalcapapa Lodge. The building will be officially opened during the first week in November. J. Mr. R. Wigley of Timaru, managing director of the Tongariro Park Tourist company, said last week that the intention of the company was to provide tourists to New Zealand with accommodation in the park second to none in New Zealand or Australia. The building was sufficiently advanced to Convey sonic idea of the magnifieient appearance it would present when finished, and ho believed that in every way the company’s ideals had been realised. The workmen had made a start with the construction of an 18 holes golf course on rolling tussock land immediately in front of the building. Mr. Wigley said it was hoped to have the links in playing trim by Christmas, and the course should be one of the most valued attractions to visitors both New Zealand and overseas. It would cost between £4OOO and £SOOO. Bowling greens and tennis courts woulcTalso be provided.
